In this highly interactive session, you'll learn what separates great negotiators from average negotiators. Surprisingly, many of the factors that have emerged in research on negotiations involve preparation before the negotiation rather than persuasion during it. Using a handful of case studies, we'll demystify the world of negotiations and unpack the process that leads to great outcomes.

Richard Coughlan is senior associate dean in the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond, where he has served on the faculty since 1998. In his current role, he has leadership responsibility for the Reynolds Graduate School of Business and the Executive Education division of the Robins School.

A graduate of the University of Virginia, Coughlan earned an MBA and a Ph.D. at the University of Arizona. Prior to graduate school, he spent nearly five years as a sales manager in the hospitality industry, first for Hyatt Hotels and later for The Pebble Beach Resorts.

A recipient of the University of Richmond's 2004 Distinguished Educator Award, Coughlan has taught courses on ethics, decision-making and negotiations to audiences ranging from undergraduates to chief executives. His views on business appear regularly in national media outlets including National Public Radio, BusinessWeek, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. He has been interviewed on NBC and CBS television affiliates in Richmond and had editorials published in major newspapers and magazines across the country.
