Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz. One - born with emerald green skin - is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular.

 March 12, 2010 - richmond.com - Mike Ward

A funny thing happened on the way to the Forum.

Actually, I lied. It happened Thursday night during intermission of “Wicked.” I was at a urinal in the balcony men’s room of the Landmark Theater. And I made brief contact with the gentleman next to me.

“What do you think?” he asked.

[Awkward pause.]

“I’m totally for Elphaba, the Wicked Witch,” I said.

“Whatever,” he responded. “Glinda the Good is where it’s at.”

“Agree to disagree?” I asked the stranger. He smiled. Then I smiled.

We high-fived, zipped up and washed our hands – but not in that order.

Ahhh, how I wish it were true. But “Wicked” – while superbly performed and visually stunning – never brings me to that magical place, whether it be the Land of Oz or a men’s room awash with male-on-male platonic theatrical appreciation.

“Wicked” the traveling show is a huge money-maker (it set Broadway records) and completely review-proof (It’s been panned by many a hack critics, including the New York Times).
