Poe Graveyard Tour

Commemorate the bicentennial of Edgar Allan Poe's birth by taking a thirty minute stroll with a docent in St. John's Church's graveyard. Learn of the lives of Poe's mother, employer, and sweetheart, and how they moved in and out of the author's life.

The cemetery of St. John’s Church is the final resting place for Elizabeth Arnold Poe, Edgar Allan Poe’s birth mother, as well as Thomas W. White, the founder of the Southern Literary Messenger and Edgar’s employer between 1835 and 1837. St. John’s Church also sits across the street from the home of Elmira Shelton, Edgar’s childhood sweetheart and alleged fiancé at the time of his death.
